A Sense of Community: Small Theatre Companies Thrive in the Five Boroughs

Playbill.com : April 30, 2009

"What really amazes me is we still have some of the original members," said Ann Gubiotti, the vice-president of the Narrows Community Theatre, which is 38 years old. "It runs the gamut — youngsters, young adults and seniors. One of the board members is in his early 80s." She added that some of the people who founded the group in the early 1970s are still active with the theatre.

Bay Ridge, Brooklyn – Narrows Community Theater proudly presents its Spring 2009 production, Stephen Sondheim’s musical thriller, “Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street”. We are very excited to be granted the rights from Music Theatre International because Sweeney Todd has not been seen on any Brooklyn stage since the 2005 revival and national tour.

Director, Jason Tucker, brings his own creative ideas to this rendition of the original 1979 version of the show. The story tells the tale of the skillful barber, Benjamin Barker, who had been wrongfully imprisoned by the malicious Judge Turpin because of the judge’s jealousy over Barker’s beautiful wife, Lucy. Barker, hoping to recapture his former life, returns to London with a new identity as Sweeney Todd. He revisits his home after fifteen years in exile only to discover that the only remnant of his earlier life is the pie shop, owned by Mrs. Lovett, which still stands below his old barber shop. As the story unfolds, the vengeful Sweeney and conniving Mrs. Lovett, who has been secretly in love with Barker all of these years, develop an unusual partnership as they plod towards their own inevitable destinies.

Directed by Jason Tucker. Music director Erica Ito. Stars NCT newcomers Clay Smith as Sweeney Todd and Beth E.Smith as Mrs. Lovett. Fridays & Saturdays, May 8, 9, 15, 16, at 8pm, and Sundays May 10 and 17 at 3pm, at St. Patrick’s Auditorium, 97th Street and 4th Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11209. Tickets: $20 Adults, $15 Seniors/students/children. (718) 482 3173 or email NCT@nctheaterny.com, or visit their website at www.NarrowsCommunityTheater.com.

Bay Ridge, Brooklyn – Narrows Community Theater, bringing quality entertainment to the Bay Ridge area for more than 37 years, announces their participation in two original one act plays as part of Brooklyn One Theater’s 2008 A Playwright Grows in Brooklyn Festival.

J. Michaels directs Dustin Cross and Michael Ruocco (all three from the acclaimed 2008 Fringe Festival production of the rock musical, The Deciders) and character actor, Christopher Sirota, in the suspense drama, “Midnight Radio Hour”, written by the late Vince Mazza, a celebrated Brooklyn playwright, as part of BrooklynONEtheater's A Playwright Grows In Brooklyn Festival.

Midnight Radio Hour concerns Jon Beaumont (Dustin Cross), an acid-tongued radio host who is stalked by a strange caller exclaiming that he has only hours to live … ands there is nothing that can stop it. Michael Ruocco plays Tommy, the radio technician under Beaumont's thumb and featuring Christopher Sirota as the clairvoyant propend of doom, "Mr. Sunshine." Other radio callers include Christine Kahaly.

Utilizing a black & white motif, atmospheric music, and good old-fashioned "chills," Mr. Michaels hopes to transport his audience back to the days of classic TV terror. "It is my love letter to Boris Karloff's Thriller, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and, of course, Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone" remarks the veteran stage director whose credits include Broadway and Off-Broadway. The production is designed by Mary Elizabeth MiCari and presented in association with Narrows Community Theater, Inc., Bay Ridge's oldest performing arts organization, and Genesis Repertory Ensemble, Inc., a non-profit professional arts & education organization recently moving its offices to Brooklyn.

Also on the bill and presented in association with Narrows Community Theater, Inc, is “Beautiful”, an original one act play written by Dana Fuchs. Directed by Denise Higgins-Regan, this play is set in a Westport Connecticut mansion. The cast of characters intermingle in a most unusual beauty contest. Gary Kozak, who has graced NCT’s stage in numerous performances, and Lillianna Murphy (making her NCT debut) play the ruthless contest judges. The audience is drawn into the drama as the secrets of each of the participants unfold, culminating in a surprise twist at the play’s end. Directed by performer and director, Denise Higgins-Regan. Ms. Higgins’ credits span the New York and London stage. Most recently, Ms. Higgins directed the off Broadway production of 700-Wives – The Musical.

The next endeavors for Narrows Community Theater will be Spoiled Cherries, a new comedy by Hollie Rosenberg, in October at Salem Lutheran Church, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, directed by J. Michaels, in November at the Theater at St. Patrick's.

Narrows Community Theater, Inc. presents
“Act Up!” – Acting Classes

Calling all couch potatoes (or, as us ladies prefer to be known as, couch “to-ma-toes”)!  You can have a rollicking good time while learning the fundamentals of acting at Narrows Community Theater’s “Act Up!” Class, taught by John Stillwaggon, professional actor and seasoned instructor with national teaching experience.

I decided, after hamming it up style “au natural” for the past few years, to see what it takes to be a real actor.  So, off I went, a little fearful and equipped with only a desire to learn more about the craft, to my first “Act Up!” session.

Narrows Community Theater presents "To Kill A Mockingbird"

Written by Tom Kane
published on October 25, 2007 in the Brooklyn Eagle

On Thursday last, at the Fort Hamilton Army base, my friend Joe Autuoro directed a scene from the classic “To Kill A Mockingbird.” It was a Narrows Community Theater production in conjunction “The Big Read,” an organization that encourages reading through the Brooklyn Public Library system and the community. It’s a quality program, and kudos to NCT, and in particular, first-time director Autuoro, for stepping to the plate. We definitely need more of these lit–minded projects.
